One Direction:This Is Us 3D

I don't think that it is any secret that I am a huge directioner. And I may or may not have let our a few fangirl shrieks during the screening of this film. It was so neat to see the journey of the One Direction boy's from the beginning. So I think that it is assumed that I will give this film a POP. Well, if that is what you assumed, you did so correctly. But let me tell you why.

In This Is Us we get to go on the road with the boys of One Direction. We are shown the best and worst parts of being on tour, from the boy's perspectives. We are shown the hard parts of missing home and family, and some of the pressures they feel. But we also get to see how much they enjoy touring the world with their best mates, doing what they've always dreamed of doing. One thing I loved getting to see the pictures and home videos from when the boys were just children, and getting to hear stories of how they grew their passions for singing. (That sounds so cheesy)

In One Direction: This Is Us we get to go back to 2010 UK XFactor, where each of the boys auditioned for Simon Cowell and a panel of judges in hope to make a career from the show. Once rejected as solo acts, Cowell brought Louis, Liam, Harry, Niall and Zayn back, and put together as a group. Even though they didn't win the XFactor, they won the world over in just a few months.

Okay so now that you've heard my cheesy 'I love One Direction' blog. :) In all seriousness though, the film was great and put together very well. However if you're looking for a Friday night flick I don't know if this is the movie to pick. But if you're looking for a good redbox this would be the perfect film.

Star Trek:Into Darkness

     "Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise." Yes. Star Trek. Known for generations as the cheesy space show with William Shatner and whoever plays Spock also known for it's weird fandom, the Trekkies, (who even have their own theme song). Despite all of it's cheesiness Star Trek is also known for it's iconic story lines and characters. I can't tell you how excited I was to hear that "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn" was being remade as a sequel to J.J. Abram's "Star Trek". In fact, I was so excited I even went back to watch the original.

     I am going to give "Star Trek: Into Darkness" a POP!!! This movie from beginning to end was just fantastic. I think it followed the story line of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn"  but was still completely original at the same time. Which I admire J.J. Abrams for doing so well.

     I absolutely love the portrayals in the remakes. (*insert fangirling here*) Chris Pine (Star Trek, This Means War, Princess Diaries 2) as Captain Kirk is simply genius. I love how he comes off as the rebel in the films. What I love most about the character is he will do the right thing when it really counts. Chris Pine is simply amazing and lives up to the title, "Captain". Let's face it Leonard Nimoy is and will always be Spock, but newer actor Zachary Quinto does such an amazing job at filling his shoes. I love how Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Heros, Margin Call) keeps Spock, Spock, while making the character completely new. And I will admit it. Dr. McCoy (aka Bones) is probably one of my favorite characters of all time. I love his humor. Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Dredd) has such an iconic character to remake and I think he did well.

The actor I was most interested to see in the film is Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock, War Horse, Atonement). Because Kahn isn't a very well known villain, most people wouldn't really care or know anything about Kahn. However, if you are a fan of the original Star Trek movies and series, then you would care a great deal about Kahn's character. In the originals Khan is a villain of "northern Indian" and "Sikh". So there is a way that he is supposed to look and walk and talk like. And here we have newcomer Benedict Cumberbatch, as white and British as he is, come in and play an considerably iconic villain. I am a recent fan of Cumberbatch's show Sherlock, and was so excited to see him in this movie! And if you ask me he has just gone down in the best villains of all time!

I would love to say that the story line and movie effects were just brilliant! I was so pleased with the overall outcome of the film and it was worth the three year wait!! :D I would like to make a big shoutout to nerd ambassador Simon Pegg, who played Scotty! And also the director J.J. Abrams!

The Great Gatsby

“So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight - watching over nothing.”   (F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby)

Our story first begins with our narrator, Nick Carraway (Toby McGuire: Spiderman Trilogy) telling us what happened the summer of 1922 and how he came to New York to try selling stocks on Wall Street. He first hears of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio: Inception, Titanic, The Island) once he goes off to visit his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan: Drive, Pride & Prejudice) and her husband Tom (Joel Edgerton: Warrior, King Arthur, The Thing) in Long Island. Nick soon realizes that the mysterious Gatsby is his neighbor. After attending one of Gatsby's parties, the gentleman meet and with the help of Nick, Gatsby makes his past his present reality.

I am going to give Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby a POP! Overall, I really enjoyed the film! The parts with the 3D effects were absolutely fantastic! Whenever they were driving cars, the camera was moving much too fast for my taste, fortunately these scenes didn't last too long. I did however, appreciate that they used the original cars from the 1974 version of the film. Also some of the songs they played in the film were modern rap, which I felt was a bit odd for a 20's setting, but it didn't seem do bother me as much as I thought it would. Great job, though to those Jazz players! They were great!

A wise Lion once said, "Things never happen the same way twice" (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), and we see this in the story. Gatsby has been spending his entire life reaching for something that is no longer in his grasp, and he doesn't even realize it's gone. Don't take the time away from your future trying to relive the past.

I was pleased with the casting of the movie! Leonardo DiCaprio had some big shoes to fill after Robert Redford's performance as Gatsby, but I think that he definitely filled them! He walked talked and spoke like he truly was Gatsby. Carey Mulligan and Toby McGuire were equally as excellent! They both did their roles justice. Joel Edgerton was amazing. He looked intimidating, yet caring the way that Tom is. I am very pleased by the way that he filled the role.


Great job to all departments that worked on this movie and I am looking forward to seeing it again!

Iron Man 3

WOW. Iron Man 3. Just in case it even needs an introduction, Iron Man is one of Marvel's biggest franchises. Robert Downy JR.'s(Sherlock Holmes, The Avengers, The Soloist)  iconic character, Tony Stark returns, haunted from nightmares and flashbacks from The Avenger's previous mission in New York. Stark finds his whole life literally falling apart once someone from his past comes back to haunt him. And he is determined to make sure that the people he cares about the most stay safe. "As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"               

Can you guess what I am going to rate this movie? Yes, that's right! POP for Iron Man 3. I really did enjoy this movie! It is one of those movies that definitely keeps you on your feet, and thinking, which I really enjoy in a movie. Can I just take a moment of appreciation for the actors in this film. First of all, Robert Downy JR. is Iron Man, nuff said. Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce were absolutely amazing! I absolutely loved how they portrayed the roles, they were perfect for them. I am a big fan of Gweneth Paltrow's work. I think that she is beautiful, talented and the perfect Pepper Pots.

Also, I would love to applaud the director, Shane Black. I think he did a really good job with the film. It was so great in 3D, one of the best 3D movies I think I've ever seen. Some people have been saying that it reminded them a little bit of Lethal Weapon, but since I've never seen the Lethal Weapon series I wouldn't be able to tell you. So that's Iron Man 3!

The Host

     From the Twilight Saga's author, Stephenie Meyer, comes The Host. The story of The Host starts with an alien species erasing minds to inhabiting human bodies. There are very few humans left with uninhabited bodies, and these people make up the "resistance". We meet our main character, Melanie Strider, straight away. Melanie, part of the resistance,  is taken over by a member of the foreign race called Wanderer or as later renamed, Wanda. Wanda is being used by the "Seekers" to find the location of the resistance. Or "Rebel Base" if you will. Before the seekers can find out too much about the resistance, Melanie's spirit starts rebelling from within. A while after Melanie starts resisting from within, she convinces Wanda to take her to the "rebel base" so she can make sure her little brother, Jamie, and her lover Jared are still safe.


     I absolutely loved this movie! I am going to give The Host a POP!!! The film directed by Andrew Niccol, had an absolutely amazing cast! The actress playing Melanie/Wanda is Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. I haven't personally seen any of her movies, however she is featured in many films such as, Hanna, Atonement, The Lovely Bones and The Way Back. Some of the other amazing actors included, Max Irons (Red Riding Hood, Being Julia, and Dorian Gray), Jake Abel (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, I am Number Four, The Lovely Bones), Diane Kruger (National Treasure, Troy, Unknown) as the Seeker, and William Hurt (The Incredible Hulk, Into the Wild, Dark City) as Uncle Jed.
    

     On top of the amazing cast, the screenplay by Andrew Niccol and Stephenie Meyer was amazing, and very close to the story line in the novel. I think that this is an amazing production and that many people will enjoy it. Yes, it comes from the author of the Twilight Saga, but it is very different from the Twilight stories. So even if you didn't enjoy the Twilight series, I think that you would really enjoy this movie.

The Croods

     Grug, Ugga, Gran, Eep, Thunk and Sandy. These are The Croods. In Dreamwork's latest animated film, The Croods, a family of cavemen find out the world as they know it is changing. Grug, the father and leader of the pre-historic family, constantly reminds his family how dangerous the unknown is. The family motto is, in fact, "Never Not Be Afraid". Once their home is destroyed, their adventure starts. They start making their journey to find a new cave, with the help of their new friend Guy. On their journey, they grow closer as a family and find out that it is okay to sometimes be afraid. And might I just add that BELT is super cute!

     I was pleasently surprised by The Croods. I will be honest with you, when I first saw the trailer I thought that I was going to be annoyed with this movie. I was so glad I was wrong! I am going to give this movie a POP!!!!! I loved how it was such a small production team. Only eight cast members and two writers who happen to be co-directors with the film. The voice-over actors include big names such as Nicholas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds. I loved the overall themes of the story too. The movie talked about the importance of family, trust, love and listening to your parents. It also said that sometimes it's okay to let go, because things do change.

Oz The Great and Powerful

  Oz the Great and Powerful, is simply about, Oz the Great and Powerful. The story is about a circus magician, who goes by the name of Oz, whose biggest fear is to be a good man, instead a great one. His whole life is all about reaching his goal, but he doesn't know how to reach it. Once getting caught inside a tornado, Oz's hot air balloon crashes in a mysterious land. Once Oz arrives he finds out that he just might be a key part of a prophecy, the people of Oz had long awaited to come true.

 

  When you hear the title of the movie, Oz the Great and Powerful you automatically recognize the fact that it will take place in the mystical land of Oz. I think that overall, I am going to give this movie a CRACKLE. I did enjoy the film, however I do think most of it was predictable and cliche. There was, however quite a few of funny and sweet parts of the film. I also felt that Theodora as the evil witch looked a little too fake.

 

  I really do applaud James Franco's (Spider-Man Trilogy) preformance. Franco played the lead, Oz. and did an amazing job with it. The three witches are played by Michelle Williams(Shutter Island/Dawnson's Creek), Rachel Weisz(The Fountian/Constantine), and Mila Kunis(Black Swan/That 70's Show). They were all amazing for the roles. Director Sam Raimi added in a few cool special effects.

So a CRACKLE for Oz the Great and Powerful!
